Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/4 cup cake flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 1/2 squares) shaved bitter chocolate (may use bittersweet chocolate chips instead of chocolate squares)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 egg whites

    Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Stir ΒΌ of the dry ingredients into the cream mixture. Stir in the rest of the dry ingredients and chocolate alternately with the milk. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in two 8-9 inch layer pans at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
